THEORY SUMMARY
-there is a cognitive process to learning that effects student behavior and intrinsically effects classroom climate
-observing others can lead to behavioral changes within students and motivational learning
-by modeling vicariously students can learn exemplary behaviors and positive self efficacy, which is self constructed implications about ones performance abiltiy (Ormrod,2012)
THEORY APPLICATION
in the video
-self efficacy: students were raising their hands, sharing, answering questions which proves they had confidence in their abilities to comprehend the knowledge and relay messages to other students
-modeling: students who participated in the discussion were models to other students of how the discussion should be conducted, for example giving positive feedback of the student that shared before
-consequential observing: students observed and listen to each other’s answers which helped influence what they would say
LESSON REDISIGN
-the teacher in the video did not really model what behaviors he felt were effective and reinforce consequences for undesired responses to his questions, the lesson could be redisgned with a "What If....?" lesson plan
-group work: students often think more intelligently and get more understanding when they can collaborate with peers (Ormrod, 2012); students can work in a group to act out a skit in which the printing press never was invented-this encourages collective self efficacy
-popcorn thinking: after students read about the invention of the printing press, they can be presented with the idea "What could you invent that could maybe change the world?" The teacher would start this popcorn sharing by thinking of something like 'a microwave that makes full course dinners at the press of a button' for example, and then she would call on someone else to share an idea
-after each person shares the teacher would give a positive or negative response and call on another student to share, which gives students a model of desired behavior and responses
-assessment: students can be tested on the "What If....?" lesson plan by using a short essay test. Students can choose to answer one of three questions: (1) What if the printing press were never invented? (2) What new invention could you make to revolutionize the modern world? or (3) What is the most significant reason the printing press was invented?
CONCLUSION
-the social cognitive theory basically encompasses the ideas that people learn from observation, have cognitive control over their behaviors and learning, and motivating factors significantly influence learning and performance.
-the video was effective in exemplifying how the social cognitive theory works in the classroom by having students who had observably highly self –efficacious and that modeled ideal behaviors, which in turn led to effective learning
